I have a Whirlpool WTW4950XW3 washer. It has stopped doing the high speed spin draining. It make a ugly whirling noise once or twice and then stops. The clothes are left wet, though the pump draining works. I downloaded the service manual and checked the diagnostic codes. F7E1.

I ran the Automatic Test Mode and got no error codes. I tried to run the Manual Test Mode Heavy Agitation, but it would not start. Neither would Low spin, High Spin, nor Gentle Agitation.

So I tried replacing the Shift Actuator based on some other entries on this site. After replacing the Shift Actuator and Recalibrating, I still am getting the noise when it tries to spin drain and F7E1 code. What does that indicate? Thanks.

Hi,

It sounds like possibly the hub, when it does that whirling noise once or twice and then stops.

Here's the hub for your model:

Here's a video to access/replace it:

--->Look at these photos below of the hub teeth grinded down to smooth. It should NOT be grinded down to smooth.

Let us know what you find.

Hi Jake. That was it! The hub's teeth were ground down pretty smooth. Now I know there were earlier warning signs. The noise was intermittent, usually when there was a heavy load. At first, washing anything on Bulky/Sheets setting stopped drain spinning. Later regular loads stopped drain spinning. Thank you so much for the advise, manual, videos, and parts. I assume the old Shift Actuator was not bad after all. Do they fail at any kind of approximate interval? For my 10 yr old washer, should I go ahead and keep the new one installed or return it until the shift actuator needs to be replaced?

I was going to call my local appliance maintenance guy whom I've used several times and trust. He was out with a bad back, so I tried repairing it myself. I'm so glad I did. With your blog advice and videos, it was very manageable. Thanks again for saving me a bundle!

Yes, the shift actuator goes out quite often too, so its best to leave the new one on.:)

Thanks for the update!

Jake
