Hey there,

I have a Whirlpool WRV986FDEM01 that started making beautiful ice, crystal clear. Little did I realize, it was only clear because it had started melting, thus the water removing the frost from it. This was in my bottom freezer section. Then I realized, the top ice maker stopped making ice completely. I vacuum my coils every 6 months according to a home maintenance schedule. The fan exposed next to the compressor is blowing away from the compressor.

I went through the service panel (service test 65) and the only problem I saw was the pantry thermistor was showing as open. I also ran a service test 5 for the compressor, and after it had completed a while later I heard my top ice maker drop a bin of ice. Prior to that test, it had not dropped ice for weeks. It also has not dropped any ice since. I am mechanically capable of repairing anything I need to, I just need to know where to look.

Could this thermistor be causing the freezer to not be cold enough?

Side note: The bottom ice maker will make ice, it's just slow. I have to use the "fast ice" setting in order for it to make any ice. Age stated is approximate.

Here's another person with this similar problem:
Is the pantry drawer keeping the temperature fine, cool enough?

What is the Realtime temperature that your freezer thermometer says it it?

If you don't have freezer thermometer you can get the RED Liquid or digital freezer thermometer. Walmart, Target sells them usually at about 10 dollars and they last a lifetime. The temperature needs to be 10 degrees F or lower at all times for the ice makers to work properly.

The pantry drawers are keeping great temperature. I have some thermometers coming in today's mail. I will report back on all 4 compartments once they've been acclimated. I have my freezer section set to -5 degrees and my fridge set to 34 degrees. I only set it that low yesterday. I didn't help the problem. Previously, I had my freezer & fridge set to 0 and 35 respectively.

I did search the forum prior to posting this question, so forgive me for my ignorance in not realizing the other brands would have the same problems.

I let the thermometers work overnight and the Temps are reporting as follows.

Freezer 17°
Fridge 41°
Left drawer 41°
Right drawer 41°

I also caputered a 30 second audio file of a noise the fridge is making in the fridge compartment. In case the file doesn't upload properly, I've uploaded it here: http://sndup.net/m3c5

Normal would be 0 degrees F. The fridge temp is too warm as well, that noise could be the refrigerator evaporator fan motor.

Ok, you will need to remove the back panel inside the freezer and see if the evaporator coil is completely frosted up and ALSO see if the freezer evaporator fan motor is running.

If that freezer evaporator fan motor is NOT running--->P14-1 and P14-2 are the FC(freezer compartment)evaporator fan motor pins on the main control board(located on the back exterior wall of the refrigerator).

I'm attaching your tech data sheet below, look at the very bottom in that chart where it says MAIN CONTROL see P14-1 and 14-2--->14VDC--->FC FAN MOTOR OUTPUT ACTIVATE SERVICE TEST 3, STEP 2. Do that SERVICE TEST 3, STEP 2 and that will activate 14VDC on those pins.

Here's the freezer evaporator fan motor for your model:

This video gives you the general idea of how to access it:

For the refrigerator evaporator fan motor. There is a video in the part link to it below.

On the main control board P14-3(YELLOW) and P14-4(RED) are the wires to the R(refrigerator)C(compartment) EVAP FAN MOTOR. ---> RC FAN MOTOR OUTPUT ACTIVATE SERVICE TEST 3, STEP 2. Do that SERVICE TEST 3, STEP 2 and that will activate 14VDC on those pins.

Here's the FRESH FOOD EVAPORATOR FAN MOTOR for your model:

Let us know how it goes.

I ordered the fresh food evaporator fan today, it'll be here Saturday. The other fan motor you listed does work, should I replace it as well?
