Hi so yesterday I opened up my freezer and the light was off and I noticed frost all over the compartment. I then put the fridge in force-defrost mode and after a couple of cycles of that, it seemed to work since instead of frost it was just wet and the light turned on the next day (today). I went to check on it again and the light was off and it was starting to fill with frost again. I wonder if it is possible that the freezer was too cold for the light to work since when it was wet, it starting flickering on and it stayed on after I opened and closed the drawer a couple times.

I don't know why the light turned off and the freezer started to fill with frost. It seems to not defrost on its own anymore so it could be an issue with the sensors, but I don't know. Some insight would be helpful.

You posted the age as Less than 1 year old, is that right? If so, don't work on it, you have a full 1 yr. warranty from Whirlpool.

I then put the fridge in force-defrost mode and after a couple of cycles of that
When you forced a defrost cycle did the defrost heater come on? The defrost heater is on the bottom of your freezer evaporator coil, feel to see if its warm/hot there when you force a defrost cycle.

For the freezer light, you may have a faulty light switch. You can ohm test your freezer light switch.

Here's the freezer light switch for your model:
W10847849 Switch

This video shows you how to ohm test it:

Make sure you unplug your refrigerator from the wall outlet first before ohm testing it, also remove the wires from it too before ohm testing it.

Let us know what you find.

So I fixed the light, turns out it was stuck in the position where it would think the door was closed. When I forced the fridge to defrost, I checked back in and it was wet and there wasn't much, if any frost so it worked. However, I check back on it again and it's frozen again after having the fridge go out of the forced defrost cycle. Also, I believe I said it was just over a year old so I don't have the warranty anymore.

Ok, but what I'm trying to say is do you feel heat from the defrost heater when you force a defrost?

Yes, I do feel some warmth and I see that the frost is melting in the freezer. My only concern is why it keeps freezing over and why is the fridge not defrosting automatically.

Ok, when you say frost is all over the compartment what do you mean by that? Frost is everywhere and on everything?

Usually when you have a defrost problem frost will ONLY be on the back panel inside the freezer, not everywhere.

If frost is everywhere then the freezer door is being left open a tiny amount, or you don't have a tight seal on the freezer door gasket when it closes.
