My landlord bought this fridge in 2016. In 2019, it stopped cooling properly and ice built up in the evaporator coils. My landlord was on vacation so I called Whirlpool and they offered to repair it for free of charge considering the history.

An authorized repair tech came out and here are the notes they left:

“8/8/19-refrigerator had partial Frost pattern I stuck my leak detector in to find that it is leaking.removed frost off the evaporator to assist customer with continuing operation at this time. freezer is holding 5 degrees Fahrenheit at this time and refrigerator has minor Cooling - replaced parts and drew a vacuum. Unit held vacuum charged with 5.5 oz and cleaned drain. unit working as intended at this time. advised cust to give it 24hrs to cool again.”

A year later, the same problem has come back but it’s even worse. The ice buildup at the coils was so bad that it extended below the bottom drawer and was about half an inch think. Additionally, during dispensing of ice or water, sometimes the unit “locks up “. The lights on the front are still on, but the ice/water dispenser do not work and if I open the doors, the lights do not turn on. Resolving this requires waiting an undetermined amount of time or resetting the circuit breaker. Finally, the ice maker takes forever to make ice. Maybe half a bin full in 24 hours?

Whirlpool will no longer do anything without charging as it’s been more than 30 days since I’ve had a repair (seems like BS to me). Does anyone have any advice?

What is the serial number of the refrigerator? I found 2 service bulletins.

Serial Numbers: K212 to K704
Possible Concern:
It is possible that consumers may experience frost, or hard ice, forming on the front area of the Refrigerator compartment.
Correction:
This concern could have various different causes each requiring a unique correction. Potential causes to investigate include:
The Refrigerator doors do not close correctly, causing excessive warm air to flow through the evaporator.
The door gasket, for various reasons, is not sealing properly.
--->The refrigerator section Defrost Thermistor may need to be optimized.

Serial Numbers: K736- K746
Possible Concern:
● Intermittent Interior lights when doors are open.
Correction:
● Please check all wiring connection and door switches.
--->IF the lights of the Refrigerator start working after rebooting the unit the board will need to be changed Part number # W10830288
